Joining BlueSky

Today, I joined the BlueSky social media network.

My handle on BlueSky is @tauheed-elahee.com

I joined BlueSky because it is the only widely adopted social media network that is open source, private and self-hostable. All other social media accounts that claim to be me are fake. I have had other people make social media accounts with my details in order to convince me to use social media.

I have set up a BlueSky Personal Data Server (PDS) so that I own all my data and thus not rely on unpaid corporate services. My BlueSky PDS is hosted on a virtual private server (VPS) with a subdomain. The VPS will cost me about $40/month for however long I want to use it. I chose a more expensive server to not limit any potential future proofing and knowing that switching servers is a complicated procedure. This is a steep price but one I am willing to pay in order to have full control over my data.

I followed the instructions found here (link: https://github.com/bluesky-social/pds) with my VPS provider.

Since I have my own domain, I was able to set my handle to the root domain which is essentially the so-called ‘verified profile’ of the BlueSky social media network.
